Privacy Policy

CourtCall is an in-development project run by Dan Stone, currently offered for concept testing rather than as a finished product. Today the only thing the website collects is a waitlist email address. The rest of this policy describes the text-message service as it works once you start using it.
Who this is
CourtCall is built and operated by Dan Stone. It is an early-stage project in active development, made available for concept testing and feedback. It is not a launched commercial service, and parts of it change often.
You can reach a human at privacy@courtcall.us about anything in this policy, including a request to see or delete your data.
What we collect
If you join the waitlist
From the form on the homepage, we store:
- your email address,
- a name, if you give one, and
- the date you signed up.
If you use the text-message service
To coordinate a game, we store:
- Your phone number. It is stored encrypted. The record is keyed by a one-way SHA-256 hash of the number rather than by the number itself.
- The messages you exchange with us. Text you send to CourtCall and the messages CourtCall sends you are kept, along with whether each one was delivered.
- Game details. Date and time, the location you name and its coordinates if we can resolve one, whether it is singles, doubles or a hit, any notes, and a score if you record one.
- Who you play with. We keep a count of how many games you have played with each other player and when you last played, so that inviting a regular partner is quick.
- What you tell us about yourself. A display name, and a skill level, home area or preferences if you choose to provide them.
- Service state. Whether you have opted out of messages, when your account was created, when you were last active, and short-lived conversation state that expires on its own.
Automatically
Our host, Cloudflare, processes standard request information such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested in order to serve the site and protect it from abuse. We do not use advertising cookies, analytics trackers or third-party pixels.
If someone invites you
Because CourtCall works without an app or an account, we may receive your phone number and a name from someone who wants to play with you, before you have any relationship with us. In that case we use your number to send you that invitation and to pass your answer back to the organizer.
You can stop this at any time by replying STOP to any message. We keep a record that you opted out, precisely so that we do not message you again. Reply START if you later change your mind.
How we use what we collect
- To work out what your text is asking for and set up, change or cancel a game.
- To send invitations, confirmations, answers and day-before reminders.
- To show you your games on this website when you sign in.
- To suggest people you have played with before when you are inviting players.
- To keep the service working and to prevent abuse, including sending limits.
- To email you once, if you joined the waitlist, when the service opens. We do not use waitlist addresses for anything else.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Automated processing
When you text CourtCall, the text of your message is sent to Cloudflare's Workers AI service and processed by an open-weights language model (currently Meta's Llama 3.1 8B Instruct) to work out what you are asking for — for example, that "play Tuesday at 6, invite Bob" is a request to create a game. Only the message text is sent; your phone number is not.
Your messages are not used to train models. No decision with a legal or similarly significant effect is made about you by automated means.
Who else handles your data
- Twilio — delivers text messages to and from your phone. Twilio necessarily handles your phone number and the content of those messages.
- Cloudflare — hosts the site, the database and the AI model described above.
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to investigate abuse of the service. If the project is ever transferred to another owner, this policy travels with the data, and we will say so here before that happens.
How long we keep it
- Waitlist addresses — until the service launches and the announcement is sent, or until you ask us to remove yours, whichever comes first.
- Conversation state — expires automatically a short time after the conversation ends.
- Games, messages and player records — kept while you are using the service, and deleted on request.
- Opt-out records — kept indefinitely, because forgetting that you opted out would mean messaging you again.
Your choices
- Reply STOP to any message to stop all texts. Reply START to resume.
- Email privacy@courtcall.us to ask for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to have it deleted. We will confirm the request from the phone number or email address it concerns, and answer within 30 days.
- Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information, including the right to know, delete, correct, and not be discriminated against for exercising them. The same address handles those requests.
Security
Phone numbers are encrypted where they are stored, and the database key is a one-way hash rather than the number in the clear. Sign-in codes are stored hashed and expire after ten minutes. All traffic to the site is over HTTPS.
That said: this is an early project run by one person. Please do not put anything in a message to CourtCall that would be damaging if it were exposed.
Age
CourtCall is for people 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor's information has reached us, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
This project is moving quickly, and this policy will change with it. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version. If a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will say so on this page before it takes effect.
